JOIN US FOR PART TWO OF REV. ROBIN REALE’S PRESENTATION
THE INTRIGUE OF MODERN SPIRITUALISM
NOVEMBER 5TH, 2017 FROM 1 TO 3
Part II, The Intrigue of Modern Spiritualism Explore an America where Calvinism and an agrarian economy dissolved requiring restructuring of gender, religious, and racial identity roles. As the Fox sisters and Andrew Jackson Davis aged they found themselves in competition with younger trance speakers as Cora Hatch, a darling of the women’s suffrage movement. Some Spiritualists moved into intentional communities modeled on Fourier and Swedenborg theories as Hopedell, MA. Trance Medium, Universalist minister, abolitionist John Murray Spear experimented with communal living and free love and built a “God Machine” on the land of the Hutchinson Family at High Rock, MA. Spear created Harmonia, a utopian free love community with magnetic healing springs and round buildings, in Kiantone, Chautauqua County, NY.
Meet Harriet E. Wilson, Spiritualist Trance Medium, founder of a Boston Spiritualist lyceum, and author of the first novel published by an African American woman.
Hear a speech by Sojourner Truth, a former slave, dynamic fund raiser for African American soldiers in the Civil War, Spiritualist, and outspoken suffragist.
Examine the life of Victoria Woodhull, president of the Association of Spiritualists, US presidential candidate, medium to industrial giant Cornelius Vanderbilt, and suffragist who was called upon by Susan Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
Meet the healers and mediums whose lives were rolled out like hymnals in the Spiritualist press as they vied for the hearts of people with visions of the “super-highways of souls” entering and leaving the earth. Just how close are we to the founders of Spiritualism, the very people who shaped public policy around the world?
Spiritualist History Workshops I & II provide a background for the upcoming tour of the historic sites tucked away in Greater Boston.
